I turned 18 during the first Covid-19 lockdown, so for me, going out drinking was out of the question. When I moved to Huddersfield that September, my ‘Freshers’ week was plagued by the ‘rule of six’ and a looming second lockdown. To no surprise, I took full advantage of Freshers Week heading into my second year. Freshers’ week is a great way to meet new people outside of your course or accommodation- especially if you’re completely new to Huddersfield like I was. Each year, the Students Union hosts the much-loved Hud Crawl where the local bars invite new and returning students to try out their menus and test out the vibes before the night finally ends in Huddersfield’s favorite: Camel Club. If you’re a heavy party goer, you’ll learn quickly that all roads lead to Camel. If drinking isn’t for you, then following Hud Crawl is the Coffee Crawl, a wholesome evening for caffeine lovers. If you’re still looking for a favourite spot after Freshers’ week, read on for my much-loved spots.
Smile Bar and Venue
The latest edition to Huddersfield’s nightlife, Smile opened its doors in March to the public. With its very own concert hall, Smile is no stranger to events. From live music to bierkeller, Smile has it all. Located just behind the University on Wakefield Road, the bar has become popular with students and locals alike. You can expect to see events like Bingo Loco, tribute acts or comedy nights! Tickets are available to buy on their website. Not only can you help yourself to a fantastic night out, but you can also drop by between lectures for some tasty street food. Keep tabs on their Instagram for more upcoming events you’ll get FOMO for if you’re not there!
Arcade Coffee and Food
The hidden gem of all hidden gems in my opinion. Tucked away in the Byram arcade- Arcade Coffee and Food is probably my favourite place to go- rain or shine. Arcade Coffee provides the ultimate main character moment, I could sit in there all day sipping away, doing uni work, journaling or just having a peaceful moment to myself. The coffee shop provides a very cute and extensive menu of hot and cold drinks and food with plenty of vegan options. Arcade welcomes you with smiley staff and a place to escape. For those looking for a quiet spot, there is also a study hub available to crack on with work! My favourite drink is their iced spiced matcha, but their coffee is just as great. Every time I visit Arcade, I leave loving myself a little bit more. Definitely a favourite amongst students.
Revolution
A controversial choice, I know, so make sure you’ve got a big budget if you’re heading to Revs, but I promise you’ll have a good time. Revs is popular in most major places, but if you’re new to Revs, it’s the ultimate cocktail place! During the week, Revolution Huddersfield do 2 for £10 on selected cocktails, but don’t be fooled because the list is quite long! If you’re looking for a party then Revs is the place, great music and great vibes, and you can’t beat the 2 for £10 offer. Revs sponsors quite a lot of societies meaning you can take advantage of the 2 for £10 for of the time. It can be expensive, but they play some great tunes and it’s always a great atmosphere- plus the drinks are so good! Try out the shot sticks for some exotic vodka flavors.
Coffee Evolution
Another great spot for coffee lovers- using Bean Brothers Beans, Coffee Evolution is a great scene for a coffee date or a catch up with friends. Although it’s small, I would consider it mighty, with a vast food and drink menu. A great place if you’re looking for those cozy vibes. Hidden between Pigeon Park and The Cherry Tree, I recommend trying out their paninis- it’s just so wholesome and located with some of Huddersfield’s other hidden gems.
Parish
Finally, the beloved Parish. Your time in Huddersfield will never be complete if you haven’t visited Parish. A favourite amongst moshers, Parish will play all your favourite rock and punk anthems- and even if you’re a stranger to that scene you will feel welcome. I’ve genuinely had some of my best nights out in Parish. The bar is only a short walk from the University, right next to Lawrence Batley Theatre. There are often live bands and events at Parish, only recently has Shaun Ryder paid a visit! Check out their gig list and pick your fancy. Three floors of great atmosphere and a huge beer garden, there’s nothing not to love about Parish. If you’re heading there during the day, they do some great food too!
Huddersfield may not be everyone’s first choice to visit, but some really great places vaster than Wetherspoons that I can’t recommend enough!
