Global Network: Interview with Thanya (Network Lead)

Why should people be interested in getting involved with your society?
We have six different Networks and Global Citizens Network caters for making a community for international students. It’s a place where we bring together different cultures and meet people from around the world.

The Network campaigns for causes to support international students at the university level and national Students’ Union level. We have that leverage to do things and the potential to do more because we are part of the Students’ Union.

What is it about this Network that made you want to take the lead this year?
I’m an international student. When I came to Huddersfield, luckily I had a community of Sri Lankan people, but it got me wondering what if that support system wasn’t there.

A lot of students who come here don’t have friends or that support system in the UK, so you feel lonely and lost in a new culture.

This Network is a platform for people to come together and talk about things like that. A bit like Global Societies, providing you with that community. That was one of the reasons why I wanted to take the lead.

If you had to describe your network in three words, what would they be and why?
Global, Active, and Engaging.

If your network could have a celebrity mascot, who would it be and why?
Priyanka Chopra. She’s coming from India and in the US now. She’s gone from Bollywood to Hollywood. She symbolizes that global nature and works for different charities, so she’s a good figure.

What’s one fun fact about yourself?
I’m an ambivert. I can adapt to different situations I’m put in.

What’s one thing people should know before joining the network?
The network is a judgement free, friendly place for anyone.

T’HUD posts a new interview with a different society each week to keep you up to date with what’s going on in and around The University of Huddersfield campus – and maybe even get you to try out something new. For more society insights click HERE.
