Time to put on your gloves and scarves as audiences are transported straight into the magical kingdom of Arendelle, where sisterly love, unforgettable music and plenty of snow take to the spotlight. Showing at the Lawrence Batley Theatre, local talent takes to the stage to perform Frozen the Musical.
Frozen the Musical is based on the 2013 Oscar-winning animated movie Frozen by Walt Disney Animation Studios. As we all know – the film follows a heartwarming story of two sisters, an ice merchant, his best friend (a reindeer) and, of course, a summer-loving huggable snowman.
The musical follows just this and more with new songs and scenes added to fit the stardom of the stage, including songs like “What Do You Know About Love” and “Hygge”. Snuck in is a generous number of hilarious jokes, out of character moments and audience addresses aimed towards both children adults alike, with the room frequently erupting into a fit of high-pitched giggles from those sat in booster seats.
One of the biggest highlights of the evening was undoubtedly the music. With fan favourites such as ‘Do You Want to Build a Snowman’, ‘For the First Time in Forever’ and of course ‘Let It Go’, there was no shortage of that Disney nostalgia. The one moment audiences were waiting for did not disappoint, as Elsa embraced her powers and transformed into the ice queen the atmosphere in the theatre completely changed. The standout moment came when Elsa dramatically released her cape, perfectly capturing the transformation into a powerful queen.
The costumes, staging and theatrical effects help recreate the magical world of Arendelle, bringing the story to life in a way that feels fresh and entertaining. The production also provides a brilliant opportunity to celebrates local theatre talent. The performance was a showcase of raw and intimate theatre, showing that a little goes a long way when proving that the art of local theatre is surely alive and well.
What makes the production even more impressive is the young cast bringing these much loved characters to life. Taking on such an iconic Disney story is no small challenge, especially when audiences already have their versions of the characters. However, the cast did a fantastic job, showing confidence, enthusiasm and plenty of talent. Their performance helped make the show feel full of energy, proving you do not need a massive stage to deliver an entertaining theatrical experience.
Running at the Lawrence Batley Theatre until 7th November, Frozen the Musical is the perfect opportunity for families, Disney fans and theatre lovers to enjoy what is a family favourite.
Whether you leave singing ‘Let It Go’ at the top of your lungs or wishing you had your own Olaf, one thing is for certain, Huddersfield has certainly been given a taste of some Disney magic.
