Victory in the Air: Men’s Badminton Outplay Their Rivals

By Jack Taylor

The Men’s Badminton Varsity event has now concluded here at the University of Huddersfield. It was an extremely breathtaking display from the home boys as they beat Bradford’s men 6-0 in a complete whitewash, with every competitor having a masterclass.

Huddersfield’s D1s had the best showing out of many brilliant athletes. Tong Hua and Augustine Benny were a dynamic duo that dominated the court, linking up with some great chemistry and knowledge of the court. They beat Bradford D1’s Aatish and Adonis in the first game, winning easily 21-6 and 21-5. Their game against Bradford D2’s Huzafah and Godwin went even smoother, and with the confidence from the last match moving into this one, they powered through with some powerful blasts and logical taps to earn easy points. Huzafah and Godwin struggled to bond in this game and lacked coordination, resulting in Huddersfield D1’s winning 21-4 and 21-1, earning 2 points for Huddersfield.

Huddersfield D2’s Muiz Munshi and Abhinav Kaintura had a similar fate as they dominated over both the Bradford D1’s and 2’s, which shows how much work had been put into preparing for this competition. They beat the Bradford D1s 21-4 and 21- 7 and the D2s 21-8 and 21-11, creating a very tough and entertaining game as everyone involved showed so much willpower and determination to win.

The Huddersfield S1 Ishaq Adam and S2 Charles Wong got the job done quickly and showed why they were put forward for the Varsity event. Ishaq beat Bradford’s S1 Adil Mahmood 21-6 and 21-5 while enjoying himself freely on the court, not showing any nerves. This calm and composed player wanted to get the job done and moved into his second game against Bradford S2 Kawish, who didn’t show any confidence in the game as Ishaq put a quick end to the game 21-7 and 21-1, showing that he is not messing around. Charles Wong was involved in some of the event’s most entertaining fixtures against Bradford’s S1 and 2. Charles Facing Kawish first was his most straightforward game of the day, showing his unique badminton style of play, winning 21-9 and 21-4. Huddersfield’s S2 continued his excellent form by beating Adil 21-5 in a confident display, but in the second game, Bradford had their most significant number of points in a game in which it still wasn’t enough as Charles Wong completed his double win of 21-12.

The Huddersfield Men’s Badminton team got the job done quickly and dominated the courts after a successful season. They are now winning Varsity 6-0. Both Men’s and Women’s Badminton have won in the events for the University of Huddersfield!
