Huddersfield Varsity 2025: A Celebration of Sport and Spirit

By Lex Wormald

On the eve of varsity, spirits are high at the University of Huddersfield as the teams prepare to defend their title against the University of Bradford. A win this year will secure Huddersfield’s ‘Threepeat’ against Bradford with wins 3 years running.

The opening event of varsity takes us to the University’s Sports Hall as the archers assemble to protect their 775-833 win over at Bradford last year.

The rest of the events occur on Wednesday, with both of our men’s football teams playing back-to-back at Shelley FC. Huddersfield’s first team captain, Byron White, said that “the lads have trained excellently” in response to talking about how he feels ahead of the game. Huddersfield’s second team captain, Luke Widowson, said: “We’ve found that Bradford’s key is set pieces, so we’ve been doing a lot of work on those set pieces and counterattacking them, which we think we’re going to get them this year off the back of it.”

The men’s rugby league team is set to kick off at 1 pm over at Lockwood Park, and this year, the team is up and raring to go after previous unfortunate defeats. The home ground can have its advantages during big games like this. Oliver Brown said, “It’s a massive game, and it is the biggest crowd that some of the younger players will have played in, so it’s going to be good for them as we also have the atmosphere to rise to; you’ve got the support from the home crowds, you’ve got the boost from the away crowds, and you use that to fuel your own game”. Touching on the previous defeats, Oliver said: “I’ve played and lost against Bradford before, but 7 or 8 of these lads are new into it and haven’t played against them before, so we’ve just got to take it as a new game, focus on ourselves, and go from there.”

The dancers are preparing to participate in their second-ever varsity this year. Despite not competing, they perform during halftime of the basketball game. “It’s a good opportunity to perform and showcase what we do. Even though we’re not competing, it’s nice for everyone to see that we are also a sport and are excited to show what we can do.”

The netball team is also up for the competition. Netball player Hannah touched on the fact that many of the teams are first varsity, saying, “They don’t really know what to expect, but they’re absolutely buzzing for it.
