Dance Society: Interview with Dominic (Vice President) and Vee (Events Manager)

Why should people be interested in getting involved with your society?

V- I would just say we’re a really fun group of people! We do so many different styles of dance, and then we have so many different ideas for fun fundraisers and so many other things going on- it isn’t always ‘just dance’ (no pun intended there).

We’re big one socials if people are interested in going out, but on there’s sober socials, we’re just a nice group of people to be around.

There’ll be people or activities, in Dance Society that you’ll gel with and maybe even more when we do our joint nights with other societies and expand your social circle and your activities.

What courses does everyone study?

V- Well, I do Psychology with Counselling.

D- I’m doing Computer Science with Games Programming

What is it about this society that made you want to join?

D- I originally joined because in my first year I was really good friends with Vee and other Dance Society members who convinced me to show up to some classes, and I was very adamantly like “No”.

I’ve never danced in my life, but, as time went on, I thought, “You know what, they’re not the kind of people to laugh at me, make me feel embarrassed about what I’m doing, so I may as well just give it a go” – I just haven’t looked back since.

V- I joined because our Dance President did the same course as me and she would always speak about how fun everyone is and how there’s no pressure to dance.

I have done dance in the past, I did it for twelve years, but I had a massive gap from that, and was trying to do different things.

After I did a couple lessons, I just really enjoyed it, and loved being around everyone and now look at me.

If you had to describe your society in three words what would they be and why?

D- Comfortable.

V- Fun.

D- Inclusive.

If your society could have a celebrity (or fictional character) mascot, who would it be and why?

D- The Lorax works so well.

V- Yeah! The Lorax- we’ve had so many different socials where, you know-

D- It won’t even be the theme, and someone will come out dressed as the Lorax.

V- Yeah, they’ll find a way, any excuse to put on the orange jumpsuit.

What’s one fun fact about each of you here today?

D- Well I have a GCSE in Drama, it’s pretty obvious though.

V- I used to have two African Snails growing up, they were great, they were chill.

Finally, is there anything people should know before joining?

V- It’s not just for girls. A lot of people at Fresher’s, that maybe come up to our table are like “Oh, it’s just full of girls”, it’s not, we’ve got a fair few guys.

D- Yeah, on the dancing side I think we have about six, seven guys now, which is a pretty decent chunk of the regular dance group and on the social side… I couldn’t tell you, there’s so many.

T’HUD posts a new interview with a different society each week to keep you up to date with what’s going on in and around The University of Huddersfield campus – and maybe even get you to try out something new. For more society insights click HERE.
