Why should people be interested in getting involved with your society?
Luke: Well, we do hold many events on about all sorts of stuff to do with British culture. Personally, I can also, at the event, usually be involved, can also teach you about all sorts of folklore about the surrounding area and England as a whole.
Eve: I’m going to say I think people misrepresent the global societies as being for international students. Whereas actually there’s a British society right there and a lot of the people that actually go to this uni are also British. So, it’s kind of like there is something for us and there is some like society that you’re able to be a part of and also make friends.
T’HUD: You know, when I first heard it, I thought it was a way different sort of thing. I thought it would be something.
Eve: No well we’re not political, but I think it’s kind of like we’re not supporting that.
Luke:We are apolitical to keep it simple because going political on both sides leads to very unhappy people on both sides so it’s better just to walk the line because we’re not here to preach you about politics or anything. We’re here to teach you about British culture.
Eve: But we’re also a very inclusive society
T’HUD: Yeah, yeah, yeah. I just thought, because…
Eve: No, yeah, fully. Because when I told my partner that I was on the British Cultural Society and he was like, are you going to put flags up then? I’m like, no, not that kind of cultural society. We’re like a global society, so we have to be apolitical.
What courses does everyone study?
Luke:I’m mechanical engineer. Bachelor’s I might add.
Eve: I’m Media Studies
What is it about this society that made you want to join?
Eve: I guess just kind of having an outlook for like, because just making friends that are like similar interests and similar, it’s just fun.
Luke:I personally joined because there’s many cultural societies out in this university as a whole and I thought “Why not British ones?”. There’s many stuff that British do what others don’t and I’m also notoriously proud British man, partially a joke but… It’s also the experience to get some experience in managing it as well as making friends.
Eve: I was going to say the social media is great for my CV.
Luke:And I just wanted to teach people about folklore.
If you had to describe your society in three words, what would they be and why?
Eve: Tea, crumpets and biscuits.
Luke: Sure.
If your society could have a celebrity mascot, who would it be and why?
Luke: The various Doctors.
Eve: Spice Girls.
What’s one fun fact about each of you here today?
Eve: I’m obsessed with F1 and Harry Styles.
Luke:Well, I’m a notoriously loon, judging by how obsessive I am with folklore. There’s a fun fact for you.
T’HUD: Notoriously what?
Luke:I’m a notoriously loon, because of how obsessive I am with folklore.
Eve: What does that mean? Do you mean like crazy?
Luke: Yes.
Luke: It’s–I’m joking, obviously. But things that–I try not to be too serious about the folklore business.
Is there anything people should know before joining?
Eve: Probably the inclusive and apolitical part because I think that’s definitely something that we like to insist on.
Luke: Something that you should know before joining?
Eve: We eat a lot of biscuits
T’HUD posts a new interview with a different society each week to keep you up to date with what’s going on in and around The University of Huddersfield campus – and maybe even get you to try out something new. For more society insights click HERE.
