Mia interview for Equity Role

What does being a student at this uni mean to you?
I’m a final year Media Studies student. I’m a queer, neurodivergent and also in the disability unit in the uni as well, so I know how the system works, I know where things are wrong because I’ve been in it for the past three years.

It’s all about like community, the amount of friends I’ve made at this uni is unreal. My policies kind of like reflect that there needs to be more like events and stuff so people can make more friends.

Why are you running for this role?
As a queer neurodivergent person I get fixated on things and I just really want to make a change. I’m really excited to be able to put my policies in place.

What do you hope to bring to the uni?

More consideration for LGBTQ+ communities, better awareness for chronic illnesses and neurodiversity.

There’s so many rooms that aren’t being used that could be used for like safe spaces. They could have like dim lightings and places for people to rest. So many people have so many unseen illnesses and the SU is just so bright and overstimulating like all the time.

I want there to be a buddy pairing system when you come to uni. You’ll sign a little form application and you’ll be paired up before you’re even on campus.

Coming to uni, especially moving away from home, is a very scary thing. So it will give you a friend to see if you can come here. So at least you can talk to them about how scary it is coming here.

I want more support groups for students for different issues like sexual assault, drug abuse, men’s mental health too.

Why should people give you their vote?

People should vote for me because I’m extremely passionate about this. I’ve put the thought into my policies. I will do a hell of a good job if I get it. I don’t, I don’t want to be egotistical but I feel like I’m just really good for the role. I feel like I am equity.

If you could sum up your campaign in three words what would they be and why?

Diversity. Inclusivity. Fun.

I hope my policies actually reflect that.
