3D Printing Society: Interview with Tom (President) and Dylan (Engineer Lead)

Why should people be interested in getting involved with your society?

Dylan: It’s a tool and a hobby. It’s multi-fielded, it’s physics, it’s chemical engineering, it’s mechanical engineering, it covers a broad spectrum.

[But] you don’t need to know about all of them to get into it and to use it as a tool, but you can. You have the option to go into it, into the interesting and the learning [side] of it.

Dylan: We offer the basics for the free, just try it out while you’ve got the opportunity.

Tom: I’ll tell you what, I’ve certainly got my money’s worth. You can see my desk at home; it’s covered in 3D printed items.

What courses does everyone study?

Tom: The entire committee studies engineering, that’s just pure chance.

Dylan: We also get a lot of interest from costume design too.

Tom:  It’s for everyone.

Dylan: You don’t need to be an engineer to be interested.

What is it about this society that made you want to join?

Tom: Well, I’m an engineer. So, I was like “Oh, 3D printing. That’s kind of cool”. And then as I got into it, I realized you could 3D print all sorts, anything, with like-minded people.

Dylan: For me, 3D printing was demo’ed at my school and then it became a hobby. I looked it up on the university website out of curiosity, attended the preliminary sessions and fell in love with it.

Tom: I think a lot of people hear 3D printing and it sounds like nerdy and difficulty and like very computer-y and engineering because you’ve got to like code the printers and stuff like that but the software is really easy to use.

Dylan: It’s the same as driving a car. You don’t need to know how a car works to drive a car.

If you had to describe your society in three words, what would they be and why?

Tom: Creativity, innovation, versatile.

If your society could have a celebrity mascot, who would it be and why?

Tom: We have a strange amount of Grogu prints, so I’d say he’s our unofficial mascot. He was even featured on our freshers stall banner.

What’s one fun fact about each of you here today?

Dylan: I am the shortest man in my family at 6’2″.

Tom: I can solve a Rubik’s Cube.

Is there anything people should know before joining?

Dylan: We have free membership.

Tom: I think people should know how cool we are and how fun it is to 3D print. I mean, no, there’s nothing you need to know before joining. I think that’s the basis of it. It’s not as scary as it looks.
